In 1989 we published the first edition of this book, as a thorough compilation of all topics involved in the design of high and extra high voltage substations. The basis for this publication were the substation standardization work, developed for the Colombian Utility "Interconexión Eléctrica S.A." – ISA, and the numerous substations designed, during the seventies and eighties, by the former Mejía Villegas S.A., now part of HMV Engineers.  I believe that the goal of the first edition was met with satisfaction.

This second version includes new developments on this subject, and some chapters have been reorganized and supplemented. For this purpose a multidisciplinary team of professionals of HMV Engineers has worked with great dedication and has delivered the best of his knowledge and professional experience to achieve this goal, which undoubtedly represents a very important design guide, both at university and professional level, on high and extra high voltage substations.

As many people have contributed in one way or another to achieve this important work, it would be impossible to try to list them all without falling into unfair omissions. As chairman of the company, I want to thank each and every one of them for their contributions and dedication.
